As you begin your search for a home at the coast, make a list of the features you want in a home and other considerations that are important to you.

  • Where do you want to live – close to the beach, on the river, out of the tsunami zone, in the country?
  • How much house can you afford?
  • If you will be taking a mortgage on the property have you consulted a mortgage lender to determine the size of the mortgage you would qualify for?
  • How large a home, how many bedrooms and bathrooms, do you want? Do you want a particular style of home?
  • Do you have any special needs?
  • How large of a lot do you want?
  • Does proximity to schools, shopping, or work matter?

PLAN YOUR SEARCH

  • If you will be applying for financing, consider the following steps:
    • Obtain a credit report on yourself to verify that the information is accurate. Take steps to correct any errors immediately.
    • Start saving money – you’ll need to have cash on hand for a down payment and closing costs.
    • Don’t incur any additional debt. Pay down your credit cards – and don’t apply for any new ones. Don’t make any major purchases on credit – buy the furniture or car later.
    • Get pre-qualified. Get a letter from your lender.
    • If you plan to pay cash to purchase your home, understand that you will need to provide “proof of funds” when you make an offer.
    • Gather information about available homes in your area of interest. Look at real estate advertisements in homes magazines, on Realtor.com and other websites. This will give you a good feel for the types and prices of homes that are available
    • Visit open houses. Looking is free, and even if you live out of the area you want to buy in, looking at homes in your area may help you identify the features you’d like in your new home.
    • Come to town and plan to stay for a couple of days. Think about renting one of our vacation homes in an area you’re considering. In addition to the rental homes we offer, there are great B&Bs, inns, and motels available. Try the local restaurants, market, shopping areas, too. Pick up the local paper. Experience what it’s like to live here.
    • Contact us! Let us know what’s on your list of “must haves” and we can put together a property tour of the area – homes that meet your needs and are in your price range.
